Very Thorough and Helpful Book--For Novelists, Too!
Highly Recommended!!!
Forensic Art and Illustration
A must for Police Artists around the worldKaren has put untold days and nights into this book and myself being a Forensic Artist for the past 8 years, I can see the precision to detail and quality explanation excel in this book.
It was a pleasure to meet and be taught by Karen and I regard my book a great reference in my future pursuits as a Police Artist.
Invaluable resource!
This text is a must-have for anyone interested or involved in forensic art. Karen Taylor does a remarkable job of providing the reader with a wealth of information in a clear, concise manner. The illustrations and photographs are not only useful, but exemplify how accurate forensic art can be when it's done well. This text is truly an invaluable resource.
Exceptional reference book for the Artist
I very highly recommend Karen Taylor's book, "Forensic Art", to anyone interested in recreating the face, either in drawing or sculpture. I had been looking for such a reference book for nearly a year when Karen was recommended to me. After a call to her about my search for such an in-depth facial, muscle by muscle, reference, I bought her book and am delighted with its depth and scope. Astounded really, it presents an incredible amount of material that is distilled from a lifetime of drawing, sculpting and forensic recreations. Karen also recommended Betty Pat Gatliff, who teaches a week-long Forensic Sculpting class I attended at the Scottsdale Artist School (AZ) - and who contributed to the book in Part 3. If you have any interest in recreating the face, `from the skull up', this is the book for you; and, Betty Pat's class will give you the hands-on, clay sculpting, facial muscle recreation essentials so necessary for the artist - beginner or expert.
Forensic Art and Illustration by Karen T. Taylor
I purchased this book as the required text for a Forensic Sculpture class I will be taking. "Forensic Art and Illustration" is the most fascinating book I have ever read. I learned a great deal just skimming over the book, with more careful reading the information contained in these pages is astounding. I was excited about taking the sculpture course before I received my copy of this book, now after reading the book I am even more so. Karen T. Taylor has dealt with some pretty horrifying subject matter in a clear, rational, respectful, and compassionate way. She takes the reader step by step through the processes used to render likenesses of those who have committed crimes, victims of crimes, and even showing the aging process in people who have been missing a number of years. The age progressions shown in this book are astounding. The processes of restructuring faces range from sketches, clay reconstructions, and computer reconstructions are all covered in great detail.
Review of Forensic Art and Illustration by Karen T. Taylor
This book is unique, in that it successfully combines a step-by-step approach to the techniques of 2- and 3-dimensional forensic facial reconstruction with essential information on the legal issues of concern to those who do this work. Among many other important subjects it covers are computerized aging programs, composite imagery, superimposition, graphics reproduction, interviewing techniques for the artist, advice on dealing with the news media and testifying in court plus the history of forensic art techniques. It has become an important reference book for many forensic reconstruction laboratories around the country. It is truly comprehensive and eminently suitable as an academic textbook in art, forensic anthropology and law-and-justice university courses. For those university programs that provide a concentration or major in forensic sciences, it would be an excellent resource for interdisciplinary, team-taught courses. I plan to recommend it for adoption at Rowan University for just such a program.
THE VALUE OF A GOOD TEACHER

Karen Taylor has set a high standard for forensic artist books to come. I don't know what else could be added. The book is extremely well organized, illustrated and informative.
Ms. Taylor's experience and talent brings life to the skill of forensic art. It is a great service Ms. Taylor has done for the forensic art community by going through all of the work of writing this book. Thank you.
The "Cliff notes" of the forensic art world!
I am an artist and a legal senior police officer in Texas of the
south. I read the first time the book of Karen to the academy of FBI
in Quantico, Virginia. I absolutely liked the book and employs it in a
regular way. I refering continuously in a chapter or another. Karen is
extremely quite informed and good writing. The book will guide each
one by all the parts of legal art of a beginner to a senior veteran.
This book has something for everyone. Higher work of notch! If the FBI
employs it, it must be acurate!
A Forensic Artist Must Have...

The Practical Forensic Illustrators Bible!
I am the 26 years old, visual artist. I bought this book because I was
interested to see whether I could create a numerical and not-evasive
legal methodology. After reading by this book, I could develop a
digital technique and create a photo-realistic legal illustration!
This book is very practical. It really of the walks you by the stages
necessary to create finished images. Then after having read this book,
you should be able to start to make images and to help to identify
people! The book is quite required, has excellent footnotes,
references, the photographs of color, techniques on the 2d
Forensic Art and Illustration
During years, I read many handbooks. It material is most completely
and directly written by far. It moves the reader by the various
matters with a logic which makes this book incredably easy to read and
include/understand, though the material is complex. The author
explains that the art of the draft is important. But it also explains
why information collecting the process is the key with this work. It
guide the reader in arrangement the emotive state of the victim or the
witness who tested the trauma situation. To obtain the good
information of these individuals in a comprehensible way is true art.
Hands Down -- the Best! Packed with 10 Golden Stars!
I am student of legal art and criminalistics, but I was an artist
during more than 27 years -- this book is the price of my collection,
and that indicates much. The human face is a very complex subject, and
covers of this book it ALL! Speaking only about the aspect of art, you
will be informed on tools, models, proportions, facial anatomy of the
bone to the skin, the differences between male/female and groups of
racial/ancestral, the hair and textures, and other references. As for
the legal purpose of the spectrum, it covers not only the techniques
of history and composition, but he also of the contacts on
communicating with victims and the improvement of memory for
interviewing, the label of audience of court and the procedures,
treating the media, the reanimation postmortem, and the progression of
age for ageing and the growth. This book dominates the arena. I by no
means mentioned all the matters and information in this book. You will
have to look at the witness pages here at the Amazon to obtain the
best taken of than it is held. Then, you should buy this book to
include/understand about what is all the fury!... The tailor of Karen
is the best in this field and it collaborated a as important and
incredible book as all its contributions to criminal justice. I
strongly recommend this book to each one with an art, a composition,
forensic medicines, and a justice of interest for victims. ~Heatherly
Kates
A must have for any composite artist.
This book is by far the most complete collection and most complete of
material on the world of made up art. Models and qualifications of
basic drawing, with the interviews, the facial rebuilding, the tailor
of Karen A all here. For no matter whom who functions as a composed
artist, or if there is simply an interest... the book de.this "is
obtained to have it"!
THANK YOU, THANK YOU--- LONG OVERDUE!!!!!!!!!!
I was a legal artist for the police force of state of Michigan during
more than ten years, and it is the BEST book than I ever read inside
the field of art and the illustration legal! ! ! It is the only
current, detailed, with hand drive operation, instruction manual which
I know of in the field of the art of police force, and I guaranteed
that nobody will currently find a book like him. It is obvious the
author, Mrs. Karen Taylor, took great pains to compile various the
methods and examples shared in all the book. It is the only attempt
which I saw to standardize the various methods employed today and to
explain the methods in such easy-with-read, however detailed and
exploratory mode. It should note how difficult it must have been so
that the author obtains the legal permission to print the photographs
and the images in the book, of this fact showing his clean very not
involved and true respect to identify unknown victims and people.
Legal art is always a very new profession and with several facets in
the world of the identification of police force. The book thus
addresses several of the unexpected challenges an artist of police
force can incur, that I HIGHLY recommend no matter whom who functions
in the field, the new one or the veteran, to buy the book. It would be
also an excellent tool or reference for those interested to continue
such provocative, but to the reward, profession. The book is EXCELLENT!
! !
Towards standardization
It is with largest sincerity and enthusiasm which I recommend this
book to the whole those interested in the techniques of identification
by using legal art. The world is very lucky indeed to have somebody
like taking it of tailor Karen to intimidate to charge with writing a
handbook on this subject. It succeeded in giving to the reader a
complete work and one guarantees it to become the standard in
industry. The calibration in legal techniques of art is excellent goal
of Mrs. Taylor' S. She expresses a major sensitivity to the victim of
the crime and she underlines continualy the importance of the good
technique of interview. There is a sincerity in this work which raises
the reader. She exposes with enthusiasm on the importance of the study
continous. The text is a beautiful size and has a friendly feeling.
They are not subjected light sufficiencies, but of Karen of tailor it
with the light.
Dead On!
If you never had a question about legal art, you answer is in this
book. There is simply nothing outside there like him. It is the
handbook on the subject. Thus, if you cannot obtain with the limited
classes, you can really point by point teach you with this book. And
when you take the classes, it is essential! That which said that it
was the bible of legal art really said all.
Forensic Art and Illustration
I was a senior police officer during approximately twenty years.
During the twenty last years, I read and studied a plethora of
material concerning my functions and me can honestly say that I never
was pleased to read a handbook which can compare "with art and the
illustration legal. I always had a passion for art and approximately
two years ago, I was given the opportunity to become a legal artist. I
was lucky to have been mentored by sergeant Will Beechinor of the
department of police force of Austin. The council of Beechinor of
sergeant was to buy "legal art and the illustration," by Karen T
Taylor. I bought the book and once that I started to read it, I found
it close to impossible to deposit. "legal art and the illustration,"
are without any doubt an essential tool for the legal artist. Karen T
Taylor is not only a one astonishing artist, but an astonishing
person. The book of Karen reflects its passion for legal art as well
as its imperishable attachment with the legal field of art. "legal art
and the illustration" are not an ordinary text. This book is the only
book of him is pleasant. The tenacity of Karen T Taylor' S for the
detail is clear. Karen T Taylor included the instruction for the many
various aspects of legal art and transmitted by relay in such a way
that no matter who, that artist or not, can include/understand and
apply the techinques ones. I believe that Karen T Taylor is really one
of the large Masters of legal art. For the legal artist, this book
(tool)is without any doubt necessary. I estimate that to be without
"legal art and illustration," would be like walk by a not very
familiar building in the darkness! ...
The Forensic "Bible"
I am a suction artist of Forensic/Composite and any question which I
had, in my career up to now, was answered by the book of Karen Taylor'
S (legal art and illustration). Each aspect of legal art is covered.
Very of a lesson of history, of a 2d and a rebuilding of the cranium
3d, procedures of interview, directives to be testified in front of
the court, materials, with the techniques of drawing. The book is an
essential tool which is like important right that my pencil and paper.
If I need assistance I will obtain it from my legal "bible".

A must have !
Karen Taylor's book had only just arrived and been on my desk for a couple of days, when a new case, involving the remains of a young unidentified girl, presented itself. Going through the book I was immediately able to pick up a number of excellent suggestions of how best to handle the remains in order to improve the chance of identifying them.
But such practical solutions are not all this book is offering. Karen's attitude toward her work is highly professional, including aspects of behavioral science and a great sense of care and respect toward victims and their families.
Another reviewer has called this book The Bible on Forensic Art and I couldn't agree more. A must have for law enforcement officers who regularly deal with serious crime, homicides, missing person cases and unidentified victims.
A Forensic Art Guide
This is a well-researched book on forensic art. It thoroughly covers most of the disciplines of forensic art. It is the only real textbook for the field. Karen's artist skills are clearly evident in the book's illustrations. She did a great job. I would recommend it for any forensic artist.

Forensic Art and Illustration written by Karen T. Taylor
I have found this book very informative. I am a portrait artist and I am very interested in learning as much as I can about Forensic Art! This is by far the best book I have ever read on this subject! It has taught me so much more about faces! I feel my drawing has improved because of the instructions in her book! I would recomment this book to anyone interested in Forensic Art or anyone who is a portrait artist.
The only book of its kind on the market today.
This book is a "must read" for anyone intersted in the sculpture, contours, and aging of the human face. Ms. Taylor offers not only the mechanical skills necessary for recreation and identification, but also teaches the subtle skills and nuances that make each face individual. The case studies were particularly interesting and she also outlines how to conduct a successful interview. This book would be a bargain at twice its cost because the information contained within its covers is priceless!
Impressive and Practical
Ever required how of a cranium, the forensic medicines can rebuild the
aspect of the late ones? This book shows you process... No doubt those
in legal science will find this book a true gem. Two inches upwards.
The Best
Due to her years of on-the-job experience, her knowledge of law enforcement and forensic art, and her magnificent artistic abilities, this is by far the best book on forensic art and everything that it encompasses. Ms. Taylor not only relates all of her knowledge on this topic, but shares a multitude of information from other experts in the field. This book should be in the collection of every law enforcement agency, anthropology department and art school. As so many have already claimed - this is the Bible on forensic art!
Forensic Art and Illustration
After having studied this book my diagram and sculpture improved 100%.
The things which it covers in this book are covered in any other
handbook I saw or any classes I took. This book is a need for any
serious artist of portrait.

The book of the tailor of Karen is the only one of its kind. Written
by a principal legal artist, it is the final guide of resource for a

A Very Important and Excellent Book.
I cannot exalter enough this delivers! I learned more this book which
I have of all the classes of art that I ever took. The knowledge of
the tailor of Karen in this field is beyond belief. It does an
excellent work to explain the technical and artistic information of
this field as if it were held beside you explaining at the person. I
thank it for worrying so much about the victims which it has so much
divided unselfishly its years of experiment with us to make us better
artists. Although it passed much years drawing the faces of the scum
of the ground, this book is not a "I" or "I" deliver. It is a book
which we had need during many years. Moreover, I appreciate that it
included the unequalled knowledge and the experiment of tapotement
Gatliff de Betty in the chapters on the facial rebuilding. If you are
serious about helping the victim - YOU DONOT CAN DO IT WITHOUT EC

What a special help this book has been for an area of study which has been so devoid of written material!! All of it invaluable as a resource for the practicing forensic artist or

from which all the forensic artists can exchange and assist each other with!!

THE forensic artist's textbook
The reviews of Karen's book reads like a "whos who" of top forensic artists in this nation. That alone should indicate the respect and admiration other professional forensic artists feel for this outstanding textbook of our profession.
Our company is probably the largest trainers of forensic artists in the nation. This is the core of the information every forensic artist should know. This book is an absolute must for every forensic artist's bookshelf--and for anyone interested in this field.
Karen Taylor and Betty Pat Gatliff are without a doubt two of the most highly respected authorities in this field today. Make no mistakes about any other publication or book being offered by the popular press in the field of forensic art, this is REAL information and FACTS, not a work of fiction.

Dog-eared and Dirty
This the best describes the state of my copy of the book of the tailor
of Karen. The tailor of Karen is clearly a gifted and quite informed
artist and a gifted author. I found his book to be an extremely valid
source of information on all the facets of legal art. I found it to be
attractive reading my first time by it, and it has a permanent place
in the extension of the arm on my desk. As a raftered investigator, I
wrote the legal field of art with a limited arrangement his depth or
his potential. Because I read this book, I gained a complete
arrangement of the history, applications and of importance of this
important field of legal science. "legal art and the illustration"
were an excellent companion with the formation which I received, and
continuous to fill of fuel my enthusiasm for this profession.
superlative
I read the reviews for this book by all the famous artists,
anthropologists, and doctors. Not a person has all the negative
comments. I am a cop of beat with only 3 years of experiment as a
legal artist, and I approve all which they say. I bought the book in
January 2001 after a detective at my agency showed me a
mass-forwarding of the pressure of CRC about the book. When it
arrived, I read it in 2 days. I was thus applied that I sought the
tailor of Karen on the sequence and discovered about it classes in
Scottsdale. I followed its class there and since then has it follow-up
the class it Co-sign with the academy of FBI. Professor de Karen
excellent. If you cannot obtain with its class, buy its book. It
completely covers each exit which I can think of the legal artists of
coatings, including interviewing, with ethics, the media, and the
court. Karen to great pains will teach with the methods which it is
developed over years of experiment and it were successful for it. It
is fast to note that the artist is not a doctor and should not try to
make a rebuilding without legal anthropologist. Art and science
function in concert, like states of Karen clearly. Karen is known
everywhere in the world for its knowledge and competence in this
field. Believe the reviews.

A Serious Book for Serious Artists
This book should be required for any serious artist of the human face. Even though it is written for those artists working "in the trenches" helping law enforcement clear the streets, it is an invaluable study of the human face. Karen shows in detail the aspects of aging, bone structure, anatomy and a myriad of topics useful and interesting for the artist. Her superb organization of this complex subject is easily understood by scientist and non-scientist alike. She brings such professionalism and caring attention to detail that what can be scary and difficult to understand becomes clear and non-threatening. Those of us, who have been lucky enough to have learned from this great woman are now happy that she has brought this area of artistic endeavor to the light.
Forensic art now has a "textbook" and the legitamacy it deserves. As the past president of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators, I know what scientific artists, along with forensic artists and medical artists have suffered at the will of the "Artistic Community", who have regarded us as maybe not "True" artists, in the Fine Art sense. While this can be argued on both sides, those artists working in these feilds are in actuality, scientists and artists at the same time. Karen Taylor certainly is one of the stars. Her book will become a classic and should be in every serious artist's library.
Practical, Logical, Methodical, Clarity, ....
I had thought that this book deserve a look... and I was right!!
The information is practical and essential to anyone dealing with forensics, especially dealing with skulls and reconstructing a close approximate illustration of the dead. It gives very useful, clear explanation with essential illustrations to bring the ideas to the reader.
I have bought the book and find it useful and interesting. ALL the other reviewers before me gave it a rating of 5 stars. Yes, it is truly a top-notch book and I have no doubt that it deserve such a rating.
If you want to get a good book on Forensic Art and Illustration, this book is a good one.
Forensic Art...
Having recently read Karen Taylor's book, "Forensic Art" in preparation for studying with the author, I found it to be an extraordinarily concise and helpful guide in my efforts to understand this field of research. Not overly complicated or too simple, Ms. Taylor finds the exact balance of effective teaching. By way of understatement, this book is an absolutely invaluable tool to the Forensic Artist or to those who would like to enter this fascinating world.
The vast amount of experience of Ms. Taylor in providing the visual means of identifying the unkown is apparent as one reads this book. Amazingly, she is able to demystify the complexities of such work by a step by step approach based in common sense and by an internal drive to learn the truth.
I highly reccommend this book. I only wish that I could give it a rating of TEN stars!
Forensic Odontologist's opinion of Forensic Art
Karen Taylor's book "Forensic Art and Illustration" is a wonderful distillate of many years of experience as a forensic artist. The style is very engaging and easy to read and understand. At no time does the reader feel patronized. There is also no pretention on the part of the author. Much of the wisdom and advice proffered is genuinely "take it leave it" with no insistence that this is the only way forward, merely this is how the author has found methods that have been successful. The book is not a scientific treatise but more a history of forensic art in Karen Taylor's hands. It is profusely illustrated using real casework and not mocked up with highly synthetic examples. In addition to being a wonderful primer in "how to do it", the book is enjoyable and interesting to read even for the lay reader. I regret that more books couldn't be written this way and I suspect that the very simple and straightforward approach conveyed in "Forensic Art and Illustration" only comes from those who feel the masters(or mistresses) of their field of expertise. I consider this book an essential part of every forensic anthropologist's and odontologist's library.
Forensic Art and Illustration
I strongly recommend legal art and the illustration of the tailor of
Karen. It is a resource valid for no matter whom interested in legal
art. As a legal artist I employ legal art and the illustration like
reference work. It is the most complete book available on legal art.
Forensic Art
I recently read the book, "art legal" by Karen T Taylor like
preparation to study this shape of illustration with the author. By
the undervaluation, this book is itself a work of art. In fact the
complex topics imply many fields of the knowledge of the facial
anatomy, the techniques of cognative interview and the qualifications
of drawing to a confidence in its life test in order to identify a
suspect or the late ones. This book reflects exactly the efforts of
inauguration of the tailor of Karen to other the exactitude and the
credibility of this form of facial identification. For no matter whom
who is interested by this field of legal art, this book is a priceless
addition absolutely of value to your library. The capacity of Mrs.
Taylor' ' S to see and translate is remarkable. The specific
techniques described in this publication will allow the perspicacity
of reader in logic and the way in which the unknown are identified.
The concepts offered are concise and clear. I examine this book being
a professional possession and it that no doubt not, like Mrs. Taylor
hoped, that is to say dog-earred and carried frequent use. It is
really to astound and a strongly successful effort, one which cannot
help but to ensure the use of this art in the world of the legal
facial identification. I wish only that the system of estimate enable
me to give this book 10 holds the first role!
This is the definitive work on forensic art
The majority among us saw that the made up sketches which maintain the
order of the artists return reports/ratios of witness, but legal art
surrounds so much more. The tailor of Karen did a complete and careful
work to make this arena technical attractive and accessible. It is the
only book of its kind, but even if it were not, it would be probably
the best. An impressive experiment and the expertise of the tailor
cannot help but to have an impact on readers, and nobody will come far
without to have learned an immense quantity about the way in which art
facilitates criminal research.
The Ultimate Book for Forensic Artists
Anyone who is involved with forensic art at any level MUST read this book. For years forensic artists have operated without an "industry standard", often doing this important work with no direction at all. Karen Taylor has written a thorough and very informative text that will help every forensic artist regardless of experience. Whether the artist does only composite sketches or is involved in every aspect from age-progression drawing to post-mortem drawing to two-dimensional and/or three-dimensional facial reconstruction, this book is required reading.

With over thirty-eight years in law enforcement, four with the..., over thirty-four with the ...., and over twenty-five years ofself-taught police composite drawing; I have come to realized thevalue of forensic art and composite drawings as investigative tools.I have searched for training in FORENSIC ART AND ILLUSTRATION. Taylor, I have found her book as down toearth and as dedicated to Forensic Art as Karen Taylor is. She hascovered all of the aspects of facial forensic art with her informationon the art/drawing of faces coupled with the other needs in forensicart. She has stressed the importance of the interview and the noneart needs of the forensic artist. Forensic Art and Illustration is anecessary tool for the beginner through experienced forensic artistand anyone involved with human face visualization, composite drawing, facial aging, and reconstruction.

Forensic Art and Illustration is a must read for anyone interested in forensics. The book succeeds as both a useful research tool for the experienced analyst as well as being a fascinating, entertaining, easy to follow text for the anyone who is new to the field of forensic art. Taylor treats every subject, from the history of forensic art, to drawing the human face to the exciting world of skull recreation, with depth, enthusiasm and a complete mastery of the subject. The book is chock full of vivid illustrations and high quality photographs. We cannot say enough good things about this book.

Must have for all law enforcement, and criminal attorneys.
The tailor of Karen wrote the final book on the artists who employ
their talents to help of the criminals of hook of application of law.
I had worked in this field during 19 years and this volume goes up it
finally all. It is A must have for any personnel of application of law
implied in crimes of investigation. Moreover, all the agents of
criminal court, are them defense or the prosecutors, must have this
book. The reason is, of the artists of sketch working with the
application of law are here to remain. It is the only book which gives
an overall picture of the profession. The tailor was thorough in his
research and documentation of the studies to support his conclusions.
Since more artists learn this profession and write the field, any
serious captain, lieutenant, Seargent, detective, or order implied in
the investiation must familiarize themselves with this book to
include/understand how to employ a legal artist can help them to solve
their cases. Thousands of crimes were solved with the assistance of
the artists like the tailor of Karen, however of vast sectors of the
country are not been useful, or are underserved by the legal artists,
simply because the personnel of application of law is not very
familiar with the profession. If all is well this volume awaited for a
long time will draw aside the word with the investigators, and because
of the greatest use of the legal artists, more criminals will be
caught. In conclusion, the public in general supposes, inaccurately,
that it is a rare occasion, or it takes a certain competence
superb-normal to outline a recognizable face of a memory of the
witnesses. The fact is, that us them artists achieve by practice this
charge, I personally helped of the criminals of hook 957 with my
sketches. The tailor of Karen says that this is done! It is
interesting that some artists will exploit the general false idea
which it is such impossible charge by claiming them have some abilitiy
superb-normal (they employ the "supernatural" word much) to gain
publicity when they make a sketch which resembles the attacker of the
witnesses. A aritist in particular claimed during years to have caught
a criminal strongly announced with a sketch, when the truth is, their
sketch is not identified the criminal, they were caught by other
means. In an additional desperate attempt at aggrandization of art of
the self-portrait, this aritst claims that all other artists but they
are completely unable, which is an unworthy untruth. All this
boastfulness distorts was right to obtain publicity for an artist who
made a sketch which seemed similar, but does not help of the
authorities. It also proved that the artist was well been willing to
disparage the whole profession just to support their own image. In
addition, the tailor of Karen worked extremely during years to show to
other artists the manner, to legitimate the legal artists, and to
deliver to authorities in the field a complete opinion of the
profession. The legal artists facilitating the application of law by
finding criminals are here to remain, and delivers it of the tailor of
Karen shows the manner. Gibson Laws, Legal Artist, Department Of

Forensic Art and Illustration
I for one, being a legal artist, recommend this book to no matter whom
interested in the procedures and the effective visual techniques of
identification. In the past, much of people asked me information on
legal art and where to start. I with tested to answer these requests
and to carefully put in report/ratio these people with other experts
in the legal field of art like the tailor of Karen, and now I am very
happy to see this reference truly instructive, functional and
practical now available to each one. I consider it that A must for all
the legal artists.
Forensic Art and Illustration; Impressive!
The impressive size of the book indicates the thorough coverage of all the diverse aspects of facial reconstruction in forensics. Every work step and work background is described extensively, and detailed descriptions of specific cases are given. Even those who are more interested in the artistic than the forensic side, will receive much: there is more on the essence and basics of human faces than in most art and school books. For the practitioner and any one interested in the achievements of the field; however, this book is a new standard!
Nothing like it
As a mystery writer I have to keep up to date with forensic developments, which can get pretty expensive--good forensic resources cost a lot more than mysteries. Forensic Art and Illustration is no exception in that regard, but it's more than worth the price because it's the only book on the subject I can imagine needing for the next decade or two. It covers simply everything, and even manages to do it in an interesting, extremely well-written manner. I actually found myself sitting down and reading it just for pleasure. A perfectly superb piece of work.
A MASTERPIECE
Finally, the definitive forensic art text has been written. Masterfully crafted, Karen T. Taylor's book, Forensic Art and Illustration is destined to become the canon of this genre.
From the history of forensic art to courtroom demeanor, this book reads as though you are sitting next to Ms. Taylor and she has decided to reveal the secrets of the forensic art universe over a cup of tea. She does it all: composite art, two-dimensional and three-dimensional facial reconstruction, postmortem drawings, superimposition and age progression. All of these techniques are related in concise, descriptive terminology that is accompanied by spectacular graphics. Karen T. Taylor's professional and ethical approach to an artist's role in an investigation is the embodiment of perfection.
This book encompasses the collective consciousness of the forensic art world, creating an encyclopedia for the artist and non-artist alike. Generations to come will study this text, and no artist will be able to claim he or she is properly trained without having studied with Karen or from her book. Forensic Art and Illustration is seamless and brilliant.
A MASTERPIECE
In conclusion, the final legal text of art was written. The wrought
authoritative book, of Karen T Taylor' S, legal art and the
illustration is intended to become the gun of this kind. History of
legal art to the behavior of audience of court, this book reads as if
you sit down beside Mrs. Taylor and it decided to indicate the
secrecies of the legal universe of art above a cup of tea. It does it
all: composed art, two-dimensional and three-dimensional facial
rebuilding, progression postmortem of diagrams, superposition and age.
All these techniques are connected in the concise and descriptive
terminology which is accompanied by the spectacular graphs. The
professional of Karen T Taylor' S and the moral approach with the role
of an artist in a research are the incorporation of the perfection.
This book surrounds the collective conscience of the legal world of
art, creating an encyclopaedia for the of the same artist and
not-artist. The generations to come will study this text, and no
artist will be able to claim it or it is correctly formed without to
have studied with Karen or of its book. Legal art and the illustration
are without seam and brilliance.
The refernce book no Forensic Artist should be without !
It is the reference work final for no matter whom related to or
interested in legal art. The author covers each aspect of this wide
subject and divides unselfishly his richness of knowledge and
experiment. Work obviously was required extremely good and you will
have each confidence on top while counting is contained. You will be
to refer to him is concise text and illustration lights and on several
occasions - for me, as a legal artist of police force, it became my '
bible '. This book was late a long time and is a priceless help of
value for any expert in this field.
A teacher's point of view
While the book of the tailor of Karen is an excellent resource for the
legal artists, it is also an astonishing contribution for artists of
portrait and professors of art to the levels of college and adult. As
such, it reaches beyond the assistances of the original intention to
enrich always another occupational class as well. The author provides
the information detailed on drawing the human head in excellent
illustrations of support of the variations of the facial anatomy and
in specific and careful respect for the many variations of the kind
and the ethnic membership. This basic framework is followed of a
section of complete instruction which covers materials, models, and to
ignite, facial proportions, devices, hair and accessories. A special
chapter Co- is written with Betty Pat. Gatliff, an expert as regards
three-dimensional facial rebuilding. Using cranium as bases, this
section includes the detailed illustrations and stage-by-stage and the
information of process for arrangement the reports/ratios of the bone,
the muscle, soft fabric and the skin. The combination of the technical
and artistic components contributes significantly to the arrangement
of the differences and the similarities between the diagram of
portrait and the sculpture in portrait. This book is a rich resource
which informs liberally of the readers about the history, the width
and the potentials of legal art like profession. It provides also
given detailed and richly illustrated of fascination, on facial
expressions and progression of age like components of the human state.
The special sections on standards, ethics and tendencies towards
technological applications provide outlines of the responsibilities
and potentials enormous for the role for the legal artist in the
company. Karen T Taylor gave us an astonishing gift of knowledge all
with its depth of experiment and passion for this work. Legal art and
the illustration amply reflect and support the highest levels for the
legal instruction of art. Indeed, a new standard was set, one which
should be held during a completely certain hour and be used to defy
the profession.
Forensic Art and Illustration
Being a forensic artist myself and having the the opportunity to have received instruction from Ms. Taylor, I looked forward to the publishing of "FORENSIC ART AND ILLUSTRATION" with great anticipation. Suffice to say, I was not disappointed! Ms. Taylor's book is thorough, thoughtful, enlightening and a MUST tool for any forensic artist! It was easy to read and understand, provided excellent references and is a valuable addition to my forensic text library. I highly recommend this book to all forensic artists and believe a lay person can get a lot out of this book as well!
Buy This Book
I am a Police Officer, fingerprint examiner and composite artist and also possess a degree in psychology. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, cover to cover. This book is Karen Taylor's, but in many ways it belongs to all of us in the field of forensic art and illustration, because we now have one excellent source to refer to when needed. The documentation and references compiled here are immense. This is not a self-glorifying autobiography, or fodder for a made-for-tv movie. You won't see Ms. Taylor on Lifetime's Intimate Portrait. This book is Karen's masterpiece, a gift to all who toil in the trenches of police investigations.
A must read for forensic artists
As 20 year old a veteran of the application of law and two years as a
legal artist of sketch, I found this to be a very complete handbook to
increase my qualifications as a legal artist of sketch. For the legal
artist, this book is A must. It supplements any legal class of sketch
which you can attend. Covers of book of Karen it all. It knew what was
necessary and did a great work to go up information in a good thought
out of book. I believe that this will become the ' bible ' of the
legal artist of sketch.
Priceless Knowledge
As an officer with the Texas Department of Public Safety's Special Crimes Service, I have seen firsthand how a competent, professional, forensic artist can make the difference between success or failure in an investigation. Karen Taylor, in particular, has been instrumental in putting countless violent criminals behind bars. Numerous police agenices, communities, investigators and crime victims owe Karen Taylor a tremendous debt of gratitude for her contributions to law enforcement; many other individuals as well, because swift apprehension of predators meant they never had to experience the pain of becoming a crime victim. Unfortunately, I have also seen the wasted time and effort and the counterproductive confusion that accompanies substandard or marginal forensic art attempts. Forensic Art & Illustration should be "the reference" that sets the standard for forensic artists. It is also imperative that investigators, police administrators and prosecutors read and digest every word of this book. These professionals need to be able to evaluate the credibility of individual police artists and the techniques they employ to ensure that serious criminal investigations are not compromised. Thank you Karen for giving them the means to understanding. The intense labor and meticulous research that went into writing this book is apparent from start to finish. Karen Taylor has handed down to us a career's worth of precious and priceless knowledge. Her next project should be an anthology of case studies!!
The Ultimate in Forensic Illustration
This is THE ONLY complete source on the subject of forensic illustration available today. Karen T. Taylor is not only artistically talented, but she can explain, communicate and relate her science so the lay person can fully understand and appreciate the art of forensic illustration. In today's computer world, it is important to understand that when it comes to composite drawings of criminals, etc., there is nothing better than the human hand and the art of listening, hearing and communicating to get across what is necessary to complete a true and accurate composite. Karen T. Taylor can take you there in this well-done and extensive source of forensic illustration. It is a must for every potential police sketch artist and every law enforcement agency!
Forensic Art A to Z
This book is more that a mere introduction to forensic art. It is a comprenhensive source for forensic art information whether just thinking about getting started in the field, or a seasoned veteran. "Forensic Art and Illustration" will no doubt be the bible of forensic artists for many, many years to come.
An Educational Tool for Many Professions
Finally, it seems we are able to take advantage of Karen Taylor's wealth of experience and expertise in the latest professional text. After hiring Karen to teach in the classroom, we as educators are pleased to see that some of the training conducted for professionals now has this valuable learning tool. Imagine the difference it can make to have the text available to accompany the hands-on instruction. The best of both worlds.
I'm certain that the excellent presentation of material, coupled with the easy-to-follow information will keep the novice reader and professional artist involved from cover to cover. And it should hold a proud spot on everyone's shelf as a learning resource for years to come.
Forensic Art & Illustration
I worked in the application of law during 9 years and saw on several
occasions still how a made up good or rebuilding can increase a
research. I also saw how a compound badly fact can prevent one! Legal

The book we've all been waiting for!
This book is a well-written chronicle of a person's life's work and passion. It is unselfish in its content and in the specialized subject area of Forensic Art; is a book for the ages.
Karen Taylor does an excellent job of covering a vast amount of information in an organized, easy to read fashion. She utilizes a myriad of visual aids that captivate the reader and clearly illustrates the subject matter. Her refreshinginly unselfish attitude allows us to see the variety of work being done in the field by others. Her collaboration with other experts in the field gives the reader the sense that this book is "state of the art" in it's content and is worth reading; as both an interesting text and an excellent resource manual for us to keep nearby when consulting and working on active cases.
Most books on specialty subjects like this are usually reduced to several hundered pages of self-agrandized back-slapping and literary grandstanding that really teach nothing and are valueless .....NOT so with this book. THIS book shares knowledge AND teaches!
I would highly recommend this book for anyone in the field of law enforcement interested in this valuable investigative tool as well as those that have any interest in Forensics.
I know I'll keep going back to mine.
Complete and Challenging
This book is not only a chronological review of Karen's successful professional life as a Forensic Artist over the past 20 years, but it is a testament to her endless energy, enthusiasm and relenting thirst for knowledge. Her ability to describe the difficult so simply in either words or pictures makes this book a must for every student of Forensic/Fine Art. The clearly described detail makes this book a must as a reference/resource for all professional personnel involved in Forensic Identification. The contributions from Betty Pat Gatliff and Dr. David Glassman make this a complete book in all methods of Forensic Identification. I have already incorporated this book in my Facial Scupting Course here at Melbourne University. The age old question to Forensic Artists "Is it Art or is it a Service". Thanks to Karen we now have a foundation to base the discussion on.

Mass Appeal
Friends in fine art introduced me to this book as one of their most valuable resources. Though concerned much of it would be "above" me, such was not the case. As a reader of mysteries, I found "Forensic Art and Illustration" by Karen T. Taylor fascinating reading. I can picture many of my favorite authors perusing this book. Though geared toward professionals, the appeal of this book to the general public should not be discounted.
Fascinating and Educational Resource
This book should be in the library of every forensic artist and forensic anthropologist. Law enforcement investigators, attorneys, and others engaged in forensic identification will also find this a valuable resource. Karen Taylor and her two primary contributors (Betty Pat. Gatliff and Dr. David Glassman) have collaborated to bring numerous aspects of human identification together into a single volume that is both fascinating and educational. Taylor has managed to produce a comprehensive reference text that is encyclopedic in scope, yet is as interesting as a mystery novel. The book is filled with well-illustrated case reports and step by step instructions on the use of techniques used by forensic artists today. Ethical considerations regarding witnesses, suspects, and court proceedings should also prove to be invaluable for anyone engaged in forensic art and illustration. Karen Taylor has worked for over 20 years in both fine art and forensic art, and this wealth of experience is evidenced in the scope of forensic science and art displayed in this book. Taylor's artistic talents, which have resulted in successful identification of countless suspects as well as victims, are now matched only by her talents as an author.
A must for all Sketch Artists!
In conclusion, one of the artists of the most accomplished sketches of
our time introduced the discipline of legal art into the hearth. I
ordered my well of book in advance and read it cover with the cover in
the first week that I received it. The history and the defintion of
certain aspects of legal art clearly and effectively are presented
with dates, names and opinions. This book will be A must for and all
the artists of practice of sketch around the world! This book should
be on the list of any artist thinking of the adjustment on a career in
made up art. Lastly, an instructive resource where the working artists
of sketch can measure and reflect on their own programs. Fantastic!
Best and Only Forensic Art Text
9Nov2000 Really exceptional, textbook quality but novel read! This book was used during a recent class by Betty Pat. Gatliff the famous Forensic Sculptor (chapters 11 and 13). Details of forensic portrait art and illustration from history to actual instruction with emphasis on identification of missing persons in drawing , sculpture, or composite from artifact facial bones or by other postmortem methods to reproduce the likeness including aging and other image modification. There are multiple case histories outlined and discussed. Karen T. Taylor has made a wonderful contribution for all future Forensic Investigation. I predict this text will be a "must-read" for lawyers/law enforcement, all artists, writers and also physicians such as myself in Forensic Pathology.
"The Bible" for Forensic and Fine Artists
The tailor of Karen gave of his talent to the legal community of
application of law of art during much of years. Its innovating methods
of teaching inspired and the artists educated of everywhere in the
world. Comes now final work on the subject. For any artist who wishes
to include/understand the human head, this book is A must. Beyond the
normal assistances of the legal artists, I would as well recommend
this book to good artists.
The Quintessential Forensic Art Textbook
The tailor of Karen succeeded with apparently impossible charge. It
wrote the legal book quintessenciel art which sets the standard for
the discipline and so that all the future handbooks come. My
conjecture is that we will be deep in this century before there is
another legal book of art of this professional gauge. Up to now, the
few alleged legal books of art to be sold were "books of vanity." If
they had any value of instruction it is extended from no very to
little. It is supposing them could be found because the majority were
published by the authors. The book of the tailor has much more than
500 pages of illustrations and information which will be very useful
for the beginner as well as the artist of veteran. There is the
suitable material so much one wonders how the tailor maintained all in
such a logical order. Be enough for saying that it seems y little to
have, in all cases, that the tailor of Karen omitted. It
méticuleusement was sought, organized, put in reference and was
classified. F
The Quintessential Forensic Art Textbook
Karen Taylor has succeeded with a seemingly impossible task. She has written the quintessential forensic art book that sets the standard for the discipline and for all future textbooks to come. My guess is that we will be deep into this century before there is another forensic art book of this professional caliber. Until now, the few so called forensic art books for sale were "vanity books." If they had any instructional value it ranged from none to very little. This is assuming they could be found because most were published by the authors. Taylor's book has well over 500 pages of illustrations and information that will be very helpful to the beginner as well as the veteran artist. There is so much pertinent material one wonders how Taylor kept it all in such logical order. Suffice to say there seems to be little, if anything, that Karen Taylor has left out. It has been meticulously researched, organized, referenced and indexed. FA & I is a must for any serious forensic artist but I think it can also prove to be a great aid for criminal lawyers, police departments, colleges (with criminal justice courses) and may even be helpful to some research psychologists. In my opinion, we will not see another forensic art textbook of this high professional quality in our lifetime, that is, unless Karen Taylor writes it. Kudos Karen.
This is a Classic Portrait Drawing Book
The book of the tailor of Karen deserves 5 holds the first role. It is
a reference work of drawing of exceptional portrait. There is nothing

reading fasinating.

Forensic Art and Illustration
Of text envisaged of the tailor of Karen much on legal art lives
fortunately until the highest hopes. Karen is dominating in the field
and that of the some people practising today who has a professional
experience in ALL the aspects of legal art including/understanding the
composed illustration, the restoration postmortem, the photographic
superposition, the progression of age, two and the approximation and
the testimony facial three-dimensional of audience of court. The
design of production of the book is excellent, the text clearly
written and easy on the eyes, the illustrations, not surprisingly,
superb and the thorough references. Chapters 11 and 13, Co-writing
with Betty Gatliff Stalemate ("injury large" of legal facial

these two distinguished the international professors -- who includes
the majority among us! A chapter detailed by analysis of chapter is
not necessary since all is excellent. Karen made a great service for
all the practice and potential legal artists. This book is now the
