starsLife - The Science of Biology 8th edition (by Sadava & et al)
This book arrived rapidly and I was quite pleased. The book also came in great condition as if new, even though it was used. I am a happy shopper. Great seller. Great product. I would buy again from the seller - good business! I feel like a valued customer.

starsimpressive and thorough
An undergraduate, freshman level biology class I took used this as its textbook. It is thorough and detailed, packed with information on a broad range of biological topics, written in a highly accessible manner that requires no special training to understand. It covers such topics as the cell, heredity, evolution, plants, animals, and ecology. It's not quite as well written as the finest textbooks I've read, such as Alberts' Molecular Biology of the Cell or Kandel's Principles of Neural Science, but it's well written nonetheless. Anyone interested in the subject of biology should give this a read. Author of Adjust Your Brain: A Practical Theory for Maximizing Mental Health.

starsWonderful textbook!
They are graduated to me from the university in the beginning of years 70 with a greater one of B.S. in physics. Leaving the world of transactions, recently I have uncovered the advances absolutely wonderous in that what I have believed for being "not-physical" sciences. Hooray for the concept of E.O.Wilson' s of the concilience! I am studying Biology using "the life" and the relative connected Web site. That narcotic divertimento! I love this book and is the handbook that better has never studied. This book is not a good one "picked" - it is a large book to study!

starsgood book
i bought this text cause it was required for class. It's pretty good, i don't know why you'd read it for fun, but it's a pretty good textbook.

starsI'm in Biology heaven
Ampere-hour, the grail Saint of the handbook: To find them a handbook that it is completely clear, explains all the functions of the object, it leaves them to understand rather than as soon as memorizza so as to they can think independently on the object and really amusing to read. The handbook as those are incredibly rare and are worth their weight in gold once that the found ones. It observes as we have found one for Biology.

starsPoor Organization
I decided to buy this book instead of borrowing from the library because of the pretty colorful pictures it has. However, I regret spending $100 on this book because the text is poorly orgnanized. Although some chapters are written well, you will see content are scrambled within some chapters making it hard to take notes. There are also errors like they mentioned that Th cell help cellular response, but they ever tell you how. The activation gate and inactivation gate mentioned in the neuron chapters are confusing. The mentioned it on the text, but they don't show it on the pictures.

I need to admit that their animation, tutorial in their web site are awesome.

I would recommed the campbell book instead

starsLife Review
THIS BOOK HAS USEFUL OUTLINES NARCOTIC And CALCULATES THAT THEY HELP The READER TO PREVIEW And TO UNDERSTAND the OBJECT.

starsGreat
I received the book quickly and it was in great condition. I am very happy with my purchase.

starsThorough, clearly written text for college-level biology.
First, just to let you know what perspective I am reviewing this from, I am a college student, and this text was used in my 200-level introductory biology course. Since I am a student, and not a professor or expert of any sort, I am evaluating the book based on how helpful it was to me in learning the material. For input from biology professors, you'll have to take a look at some of the other reviews here.

"Life: The Science of Biology" has definitely been one of the better biology textbooks I've used. The text is well written, with clear explanations and plenty of real-life examples to help you tie small details into the bigger picture. But beware: The information here is incredibly in-depth, so if you're only looking for a basic overview of biology, you may actually want a slightly simpler book, otherwise you may get lost in all the details. It was perfect for my 200-level class, and gave me all the information I needed, but I don't think it would be the ideal text for an introductory biology course. One other reviewer here mentioned that she used this text to teach her AP biology students. I took AP biology in high school (and got a 5 on the exam) and can guarantee you that this text contains far, far more than you would ever need to know to get a perfect score. It's definitely a college level text.

The book has numerous detailed, well-labeled diagrams that are helpful in understanding different processes. In fact, being a rather visual, hands-on learner, I sometimes found the step-by-step diagrams easier to follow than the text itself. There are also plenty of great photographs and other helpful images. At the end of each chapter there is a bare-bones overview of key points you should know, and a self-quiz to help you evaluate your grasp of the material. At the end of the book there is an extensive glossary with definitions of key terms.

Unfortunately, there is one mistake in this book, to be found in chapter 34, "Deuterostomate Animals." On page 674, some text from the previous page is repeated, and this in turn means that part of the section entitled "Primates and the Origin of Humans" is cut off, even ending in mid-sentence. The following page is filled entirely with pictures and diagrams, no text, and then on page 676 where the text starts up again, it skips to the beginning of the next section, entirely leaving out a chunk of information. This is the only place in the book where I found such a problem.

There is a website to accompany this text (www.thelifewire.com). I never found it necessary to use the site for my studies, but it may be helpful for some. It contains chapter summaries, animated tutorials, text-related activities, self quizzes, suggestions for further reading, and a glossary of key terms (same as the one found at the back of the book). The book is also supposed to come with a CD-ROM. My school's bookstore was selling the books and CDs separately, and I did not purchase the CD and so cannot evaluate its usefulness. I know I learned everything I needed without it, and I suspect the book and website alone would be sufficient for most students' needs.

Aside from the glitch in chapter 34, mentioned above, I have found nothing to complain about with this book. I will definitely be hanging on to it for future reference, and highly recommend it to anyone needing a detailed, comprehensive biology text. NOTE: This review refers to the 7th edition of this book.

starsmissing pages
As many of the other critics already have declared to us, this is a large book for Biology of intro. If you take it it is sure that it is not lacking the pages however. I have read with it in understood it the 34 before the location of the some missing of Info! While I read Chp 34 pp 673 I see that the intro "to the supremacies and the origin of the human beings" it is still repeated to the following page. Moreover, on pp the 674 where this Info is repeated, the Info is arrested without warning and it is not continued on pp the 675 (that he is comprehensible since it is all the photographies), neither on pp the 676. Instead, pp the 676 begin with "the human ancestors have evoluto the locomozione bipedal", therefore, andante towards the outside the connection between anthropoids and the hominids. That is crucial Info because it is the Info that says to us from where the human beings have come! It is some of the more critical Info in all of the handbook! If controls selected this high book these pages. If it for one is lacking immediately this return Info correct copy.

stars++Excellent textbook studied by students in UCLA
There's a reason why this textbook is used at one of the top public universities in the nation. It is clearly written, lots of pictures that has step-by-step comments, a concise chapter summary and discussion questions. Chapters are relatively short at 16-26 pages each, full of detailed pictures and fairly easy reading for the scientific individual. Compared to Scientific American, it is easier to read.
The CD-ROM has flashcards, animated tutorials (videos and sound), games, self-quizzes (small) and large chapter quizzes (multiple choice) with explanations for every answer you got incorrect or correct. The animation videos are very helpful in picturing abstractions such as molecular formation.
Study guide has a more in-depth chapter summary notes and more multiple choice questions with explanations to the answers. Many if not all chapters related to current news updates on science, so the book is a very recent infusion of current science developments with past biology.

UCLA students have used books from these authors for a few years now in their Life Science 1,2 courses (biology). Excellent text.
I had a fun time in the class both because of my outstanding professor Dr. Kubasak and the outstanding textbook!

starsBut is ok, spend time 2 memorize the details though
Very similar to other biology books, there will not be a feature in this book that will make it significally stand-up from the other ones. In despite of that, I really recommend the website that accompanies this book. The animations are great to understand biological concepts such as PCR, operons, etc.
Everything is in great detail (too much detail for an introductory class in my opinion)... the organization could have been better to make the students understand. Sometimes I feel it provides so many details that the big picture is lost! I think that the cellular respiration chapter organization was confusing (it kept going from glycolisis to kreb's cycle back and forth.) It will be somewhat hard if you want to use this book to learn biology independently.
If you are a highschool student, I would highly recommend this book since it gives a great approximation of the type of books that will be used in university. I understand that MIT, Harvard and UCSD uses this book for their undergraduates...

starsComplete college biology book.
I have used this book for my codes category of Biology of the university. It was complete and it has lotteries of the Info on development, the ecology, the reproduction, the ways of energy, etc. Moreover I have found I have used the last guide of study for Biology: Questions and answers key of review with Explantions from volume 1 of Patrick Leonardi, from volume 2 and volume 3. They have been suggested these books from a student of the colleague. They are happy it I have taken its recommendation because these guides of three studies have had the kind of study questions that my university professor of the university has made on the exams. These questions have left it in the just sense in that what was important to study. The handbook of Purves and these guides of three studies were that what helped me in order to pass Biology with the flight colors.

starsGargantuan
As far as biology books go, this book is gigantic, in terms of size, information content, and price. The information contained in the book is definitely well presented (lots of nice diagrams and picture, all of which are very clear) and up-to-date. There are references to events which have occured as recently as a couple years ago. Also nice is the historical context; I've never really seen a biology book that says "this process was discovered by Dr. so-and-so, from so-and-so University/Institute of Technology, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in so-and-so year." It doesn't add a whole lot to the book, except that it adds a human dimension to the otherwise boring (sorry to any biologists who are reading this review) subject of biology.

starsVery clear, well written bio text
Purves and others make a job large that it balances the concept of an introductory text with the complexities to align of the biological systems. Even if some of the text is intimidating, has found that it was easy to embezzle the salienti points from the understood one them that not enamored of and the sufficient depth of offering of the book for a more complete exploration of the understood one them that they have interested it more ulteriorly. That is characteristic one much rare one for the greater part of the witnesses of intro -- I usually find that if is interested in ulterior study, I must make the search a lot in order to make therefore. This book renders it very easier to search deeper in those subjects that incuriosiscono the reader.

starsA dissenting opinion!
In reviewing this text for possible adoption, I have come to the opposite opinion from other reviewers. I found the book to be written mostly for the faculty and not for the students. It is filled with details totally unnecessary at an introductory level and which will serve only to confuse the students. This is particularly true of the section on evolution and classification which seems to follow every fad and goes so quickly that few will be able to keep up. The beautiful overall picture is totally lost. Although there are fewer pages (a good thing) they have achieved this partly by reducing the size of the print, making the text more difficult to read. The figures are great, but this does not make up for the basic defects in the book.

starsAn excellent introduction to all facets of biology
I've used this book all throughout college, from Introductory Biology to studying for the Biology GRE. It's never ceased to be useful. It's well-written, and goes into sufficient depth while remaining readable. If you need a general reference for biology, buy this book!

starsAn Excellent Book For International Baccalaure Biology
This text is used for Biology of the high level of the international program of baccalaureate to the High School di Palmer. Like student, I find the extremely leggibile text with the useful outlines and appreciate the relative totality. Our school has used the these handbook for several years and has one of the stronger programs of Biology of the High School in the world.

starslots of places use this
the yale uses it man equally... that I have obtained to pay the crazy paste this stuf

starsBest Biology Textbook Publication in a very long time!!!
I have reviewed Campbell, Curtis& Barnes, and other fine textbooks in biology, as a teacher and a scientist, I find Purves, etal; Life , A Science of Biology as the best textbook on the market. His clear explanation of the concepts with bright, colorful pictures have helped my students to understand biological concepts for the AP Bio exam as well as preparing them for college. The questions after each and every chapter plainly incorporate the chapter's lessons as well as inclusion of the continuity of life that is important in all biology teaching. His book had already included the new domain designations and included the reasons as why they were being changed. ( As this was the infamous #3 question on the AP Bio exam.) As a trained molecular biologist, I am finally satisfied in the explanation of the molecular process of life. Again his use of good solid pictures help to re-enforce a difficult concept. I also know that MIT uses this book as well as Harvard, I urge every biology teacher professor to at least have this in their personal library.

starsmakes AP bio a whole lot easier
Like member of bio- AP program, I think that the information a lot must crammed in the head of the student. Other Purves and meticulous explains every process, holding account the memorization and, more of importance, to understand easier of the complex processes. Some understood them, however, are still extraordinary difficult to acquire mastery of. As an example, understood them 14 and 15 were practically impossible (snrps anyone) Except those, this book is perfect. The images and the explanations that they accompany to them are many profits. I would suggest this book to that they are considering a course of AP Biology or a course of the university (you have even known the uses de Harvard this book? That one has rendered we it sly students of the High School tact!) It enjoys everyone!

starsSomewhat lessens the hell that is AP Biology
Like a eleventh victim of the degree of AP Biology, I it has found a sure one solace in this handbook. Well- it is written and illustrated and it is usually clear and informative. Beyond to the understood one them occasional that they have thrown it for a cycle (as an example: Understood it 14 - genome of Eukaryotic and the relative expression. Huh) the book is much bond and I would suggest students to it of future AP to the bio -.

starsA Wonderful, Expansive Overview of Biological Science
Torreggiando over the underbrush always increasing of the mediocre handbook, "the life" is an excellent book that completely discovers to the wealth and the complexity of biological science. Approached constantly from a scientific point of view, the subjects are introduce to you in great detail without to sacrifice the clarity that is demanded for the introductory witnesses. The illustrations are numerous and beautiful; they are instructive in and of if same. I have begun to use this book like supplement for a mediocre text in a course of Biology of intro, but a lot soon I have used it exclusively. If wished a large text of Biology, BUYS THIS BOOK.

starsI enjoyed using this text
Life: The Science of Biology was a great text that I read during a cell biology course. Unlike lots of other science textbooks, this one did not read like a checklist of various theories and models. Purves et al developed their ideas throughout the text and presented them in clear terms which made learning easier. Difficult cycles and mechanisms were meticulously explained without becoming dull or esoteric. The helpful figures, which were well integrated into each topic, brought the minute details of the smallest organelles to life. Life: The Science of Biology was a wonderful companion which I still refer to time and again as the final word on issues of biology.

starsPurves is a genius.
I have found "Life, the science of Biology" an incredibly helpful aid to my studies of the life sciences. Purves brillantly eludicates the very fundementals of this science to the utmost pinnacle of schlorship.

starsthe details of biology in "life" are descriptive.
the details of biology in "life" by purves, are descriptive. the pictures are also descriptive and tell a lot of information needed to process biology.

starsA terrific learning tool leaving no question unanswered.
"the life" is a large handbook for the codes category of Biology is left over to you. Standard the fundamental principles with particular and the depth. Purves has generated a learning tool formidable that question without answer does not leave.
