The Image Processing Handbook, Fifth Edition (Image Processing Handbook)
Reviews:

starsgreat book focusing on concepts rather than math
I am a biologist with a little background in math. Using this book and matlab I could quickly implement basic feature recognition tools to analyze microscope images. The book focuses on concepts and explains them in intuitive language rather than in mathematical terms. Overall, it worked perfectly for me, but could be over-simplying for people with technical background.

starsA seminal and essential addition
Image processing is used to improve the visual appearance and transmission of images to a the human eye. It also concerns the preparation of images with respect to measuring an image's features and structures. Now in a newly updated and significantly expanded fifth edition, "The Image Processing Handbook" by academician John C. Russ (Materials Science and Engineering Department, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina) "The Image Processing Handbook" features an informative chapter explaining which visual cues elicit a response from the viewer; descriptions of the latest hardware and software for image acquisition and printing including digital cameras; multichannel images and an analysis of their principle components; the issues of deconvolution, extended dynamic range images, and image enlargement and interpolation, and so much more. Enhanced with more than 2000 illustrations, and with the availability of a companion CD-ROM, "The Image Processing Handbook" is a seminal and essential addition to professional and academic library Computer Science and Electrical Engineering reference collections.

starsNew 5th edition continues its tradition as a valuable tool
The book of John Russ on the image processing was never designed to be a handbook on the way in which to include/understand and write your own algorithms of image processing, because you could believe while looking by the contents. It covers just about very that you would see in such a handbook, but from the point of view of a user of these operations, not as an author of the code of image processing which must include/understand the algorithms behind these operations. Instead of that, Russ explains all the operations, their value in various applications, and provides many illustrations showing before and afterwards images of what each operation. There is no algorithm, pseudo code, or mathematics in this book. The jewel in the crown of this book is CD of companion. It contains more than 200 connections of Photoshop to carry out the operations mentioned in this book. These connections work on the grayscale of 8 bits and 24 images of bit RVB and are divided of categories of the adjustment of image, the handling of color, the maths of image, the Boolean operations, treating Fourier, the morphological operations, the treating vicinity, the operations of distance-chart, thresholding, of the measurement of device, calibration, the stereology, and of made external. The bad news is that you must obtain CD separately. If you must include/understand mathematics detailed behind such operations, you could consult the image processing of DIGITAL by Gonzalez and wood, and to return then to this book so that the tools achieve the operations explained in this book. The updates with this fifth edition include an additional chapter on the human vision and how it of the ties in the image processing. Moreover, the author updated his sections on the hardware and the software of frame grabbing to describe the last tools available. In conclusion, the matter of the formation tomographic image was increased and given its own chapter and the chapter on the frame grabbing 3d was deleted. It is an excellent book on the image processing of a technician of systems and a point of view of user. You will be disappointed if you intend to learn the algorithms behind the techniques shown in this book.

starsSuitable as Text or Reference
This, the fifth edition of this standard reference work of industry on the image processing was appreciably increased. There are some 600 new and revised images. An important device of the new edition must describe the new advances which came approximately in equipment for the capture and the impression from image. This includes new versions of traditional equipment and new incipient technologies. The text was increased in the sectors like the déconvolution, the images of prolong-dynamics-range and the formation multichannel image including/understanding the analysis of main thing-components. In general this book does not cover basic mathematics which allows the image processing. Those are left with the books of speciality on the subject. Instead of that this book is envisaged to be employed at the same time as the equipment with hand drive operation where the reader is encouraged to test with various methods to determine what is necessary for particular work. While adapted for the use as text, this book is really a handbook for the technical users. The book more is directed so that various the availavle of tools to be really helped.

starsNearly perfect
As others have stated, this book comes as close as you'll ever get to a single-source reference on image processing. But if I were ever going to shoot anything down in it, I'd say that a little more mathematical background on some topics (and maybe pseudocoded examples) would help. For example, in the satellite geometric correction section, only a very high level view is given yet this is a challenging topic that could use more depth. Geometric transformations in general could use more depth, e.g. camera calibrations or image warping/morphing/mapping to other projections for example. Another example would be the need for a little more depth on how to make slow algorithms fast ...like convolution multiplications for example. Sure, you could write out the multiplies and spot commonalities, then re-use results that appear in more than one subsequent equation and what not, but some exploration of matrix math and how to make it efficient would be nice. But again ...I'm picking at small things here, and if John's book covered everything that I'd like it to, then it would become 2 books, not one ...hey! Now THERE's an idea! A 2+ book set by John Russ that covers a broader range of topics and does so in greater depth! That's something that I'd pay for (and much better to read than Ballard & Brown)

starsA Worthwhile Purchase
John C. Russ is also the developer of FoveaPro, a plugin for Photoshop that can perform many different thresholding steps on both color and grayscale images.

The book describes the steps necessary to convert raw images to meaningful numbers that characterize the subject. The process of image analysis - obtaining meaningful numeric information from images - typically requires several steps performed in sequence. According to Russ, one can use Photoshop or a compatible program in conjunction with the plug-ins in order to provide all of the necessary tools, but it is important for the user to understand them and when to use them.

The book outlines most of these essential tools. The book describes the purpose and value of adding and subtracting images to and from one another, thresholding on certain color values, measuring aspect ratios, calculating nearest neighbor distances, measuring perimeter and roundness, measuring total area of one feature or the area fraction of all features, plotting a histogram of color or feature distributions, and other tools that are necessary for the statistical analysis of images. In almost all cases, the functions described in the text apply directly to FoveaPro.

The tools presented and described in this text would be valuable to anyone who is trying to obtain data from a set of images. Image processing is used in facial recognition software, the measurement of microstructural features in metals, the identification of defects in retinal scans, the analysis of geological features in satellite and aerial images, and matching of finger prints. With this text, FoveaPro, and Photoshop, in conjunction with Photoshop's "batch" function and a program like Microsoft Excel, a person with intermediate computer experience can generate significant statistical data from an image database.

starsthe seminal work
It is him. All which you must know the formation image. If you are in any doubt, purchase right it!

starsA good user manual for image processing
This book reads like a user manual for an engineering image processing toolkit. In fact, that is exactly what it is -- the author sells a companion CD that is a set of image processing plug-ins to PhotoShop. However, you will not need to buy his toolkit to find this book valuable. Any image processing package that you use will be of greater use to you if you have this book at your side. The important thing to realize is that this is a handbook for technical USERS. It is not a programming manual for how to implement the techniques it discusses, but a very high-quality discussion of what the techniques are and when and why you would use them. Within that domain, the book has remarkable depth and clarity. It is quite up-to-date in its coverage, and draws extensively from real-world applications in medicine, microscopy, and satellite imaging. If you need to develop image processing procedures in your work as an engineer, you will want to have this book by your side.

starsExcelent Handbook
If you are mainly interested by aspects of teledetection of the image processing (for example, satellite and airborne illustrated language of the ground). I recommend to acquire this handbook on the image processing. The best handbook by far on the general image processing is "the handbook of image processing" published by Russ and published by the IEEE. I employ this book all the hour. Naturally, if you enter specific sectors, such as tracing, language illustrated hyperspectral, synthetic illustrated language of radar of aperature or photogrammetry (C-with-D., precise physical measurement of illustrated language), or if you have a specific application (such as the deforestation or the diseases or the agriculture of factory), you should examine the books separated on these matters.
