Amazing thought and insight...
Edwards is known for the largest Sinners never known as of sermon "in
the hands of annoyed God" and the majority of the people stop with
this sermon and do not read more far _ these two vast and complete
being volume and not for one which to want for occasional Edwards
lira. These two volumes are always in its venacular original and
stripped be contemporized as I saw with other work. They include the
sermons, the thoughts and the letters that Edwards wrote on various
matters, including its two "more popular Sinners in the hands of
annoyed God" and of the "freedom of the will" and of much, much more.
It is large of reading of a man thus devoted to the word of God and to
want to see his cold puritan pars coming to Christ. Do not buy these
volumes if you are an occasional reader, this work are very deep on
great theological questions but if you want to be defied they would be
a great addition with your library. The only exit that I have is that
it is difficult to direct by the sermons, they could have done a
better work with an appendix this to facilitate to find information
for the reference. That should not carry contents however because you
will be encouraged considerably in your study with Edwards.
A note regarding the Works of Jonathan Edwards
It is not an examination of work of Jonathan Edwards, which is in any
case simply exceptional and which almost each person -- Christian and
not-Christian, elder and the young people convert, apologist and
researcher of truth, disciple and the layman -- would make probably
well for reading and digesting, but rather a note for those interested
while buying currently enumerated, the edition of Hendrickson of
two-volume (ISBN 1-56563-085-8). Work of Jonathan Edwards is not
complete work of Jonathan Edwards. A couple of the others criticize
must have accidentally given on this fact, but it comprehensible is
given the already immense size of the anthology. Nevertheless, all
religious work well-known Jonathan Edwards ' is indeed included:
"resolutions"; "freedom of the will"; "the end for which God created
the world"; "the nature of the true virtue"; "Religious Affections";
"account of astonishing conversions"; "thought on the rebirth of the
religion in England News"; "a history of the work of the repurchase";
"the life and the private diary of David Brainerd"; and naturally
"Sinners in the hands of annoyed God." Moreover, there is abundance of
less known religious work youth of not very front Edwards ' to its
death to occupy the reader interested in the pious thought and
reflexion. Concerning the various sermons and other writings which
would achieve the collection of Edwards, but which unfortunately is
not contained above, for the majority those can be found on line by
the intermediary of a fast search for Google (C-with-D., only of more
obscure work of Edwards ' should not be found on line, insofar as I
can say). To speak of what, you can look at the contents as well as
whole work itself on line for free too with the éthérée library of
traditional Christians, for example, if you want to see for yourself
what is specifically included in this collection before buying it.
However, although work of Jonathan Edwards is available for in free
line, in my opinion it is more convenient good to have the printed
version, because I am personally a more comfortable reading with a
book (no matter what its size) in my covering that in front of a
screen of computer. Naturally, if you want the edition final, which
would include each twenty-three volume non-réligieux various Edwards
work of ' published up to now (its work including on matters such as
John Locke, science, etc), you will have to buy the edition of
university of Yale of the same name. But that will cost you an arm and
a leg, more there is a considerable quantity of secular criticism of
academic, whom you can or cannot find useful. For example, the volume
of Yale on "the life and the private diary of the published version of
David Brainerd" compare the private diary original of Brainerd with
Edwards ' of the private diary, claiming in the process that Edwards
published in order to make Brainerd conform to a concept preconceived
of "sainteté." However, if you are sharp on buying the edition of
Yale, the best price available than I could find is with the full
ground Christian books, which is an excellent bookshop besides. Thus
although the publication of Hendrickson is not substantively a
complete collection of Edwards, it is more than "rather narrow."
Edwards was mainly Pasteur and a theologist, and it is what is
reflected in these volumes. In my opinion, then, given the price and
the contents, this compilation of work of Jonathan Edwards is the best
edition available for these mainly interested by Edwards as a humble
and faithful servant of Jesus Christ. Moreover, about the text and of
the fastener. A single-sided page is divided into two columns, so that
when you open a volume, there will be a total of four columns facing
you (since there are naturally two pages to look at when a book is
open). I am not sure what is the size of police force, but it cannot
be more than 10 points. In fact, I would try to guess that it is even
slightly smaller. Concerning the fastener, it is vigorous, but I have
a feeling which it can not delay well with the constant reading. The
fastener is completely similar to other publications of Hendrickson,
if you are well-informed of them (for example, work of Josephus, ISBN
0-913573-86-8). In conclusion, I strongly suggest looking work of
Jonathan Edwards on the Web site of the editors of Hendrickson before
buying it. In more of the photograph of two volumes, you can download
a file of reader of acrobat of adobe (pdf) of a chapter of sample to
look at (at least per hour of this review). Thus you can obtain a real
image of what I can only slightly describe with words. I hope
sincerely that this helps. And by reading this work, can you be
carried out more entirely to study and include/understand the bible,
since it is the bible which Edwards itself is completely leaning top
in its writings: for believing, to know it and like more deeply, and
for that with ears to hear, come to know and it to like because he
loved you the first time. Update: The comments above were based on the
edition of Hendrickson, but now that I saw both the edition of
Hendrickson as well as the banner of the edition of truth I can in the
same way recommend to buy the banner of the edition of truth. Although
the contents are identical, in my opinion the banner of the fastener
of the edition of truth is more vigorous and of more high quality.
However, if you prefer work with a police force slightly larger (hein,
other side, the size of police force is probably negligible), like
perhaps a more coloured and more attractive cover, then the edition of
Hendrickson could be better. You can find both Hendrickson as well as
the banner of the editions of truth (ISBNs 0-85151-216-X and
0-85151-217-8) to the books of Monergism, another fine bookshop
(personally, I prefer the banner of the edition of truth.) Moreover,
which follows by Dr. David Martyn Lloyd-Lloyd-Jones in his conference
"Jonathan Edwards and the crucial importance of the rebirth" could
prove to be useful to certain: The two volumes recently republished by
the banner of the confidence of truth were often regarded as complete
work, but they are not. A man published a book in being composed 1860'
S many of other things which are not in these two volumes, and there
are motionless more-sermons, occasional letters, remarks, mixtures and
so on. They all are which will be reprinted in [ the final edition of
Yale ].
An amazing collection
Freedom of the will, the religious affections, the end for which God
created the world, the nature of the true virtue, the defended
original sin, Pécheurs in the hands of annoyed God... they are all
here and much more. They are certain the Christian writings most
influential of all the hour in the branch of calvinist of Christendom.
The reappearance of Calvinism and the enormous rise in the studies of
Edwardsian in the Christian and secular academic world make with this
whole of two volumes of its work an addition essential with no matter
whom library. With almost 1000 pages in each volume, there is here
than you will probably never read. However, because of so much of
speech, treaties, and sermons, the size of impression is very small --
in order to adapt all the material in two volumes. Moreover, it is a
reprinting fascimile of one 19th edition of century, thus the quality
of police force is poor. Other that these disadvantages, it is an
excellent unit and a great value. The collection multivolume of Yale
will cost you above thousand dollars, whereas very that you will never
want is in this collection. In my opinion, the greatest addition with
this unit is the memories of Jonathan Edwards. It is narrowest which
you will obtain to receive a personal glance with its life of the
faith. They increase work considerably and to inspire theological
intellectual-important (and the same) the brilliant sermons. The title
Jonathan Edouard as "a larger theologist of America" (or simply the
"théologien of America") well- is deserved. Do not leave the
caricature of the "feu and sulphur" to dissuade you.
In My Top Ten All-Time Favorite Theological Works
This Hendrickson edition is a remake of the Banner of Truth Edition from 1984 (a 2 Vol. Set). All of the works of Edwards are included. In this work Edwards' memoirs, sermons, theological treatises, miscellaneous discourses, and short observations are included. Everything and anything written by Edwards (including his most famous works and the lesser known short works) are present. This is the ultimate primary text to own from Edwards.
Brace yourself. Edwards can write some of the most simplistic theological thoughts and some of the most complicated theological thoughts and have one follow the other in a single paragraph. This volume will fill your days with hours of great reading, most of which you will have to reread, and then read again to get a grasp of what Edwards is trying to say. There are certain works, herein, that I have read a dozen times and have yet to fully grasp what Edwards is communicating (though that is no cause to ever stop trying).
Edwards discusses issues such as the human will, freedom, predestination, the attributes of God, sin, original sin, salvation, the Church, marriage, love, time, etc. Even topics that one would never give much thought to, such as indetermination, are included in these pages. Edwards has a way with words that can often times be staggering - to think that someone could write in such a manner. If you are wanting to read Edwards' works then here they are all in one text. But I must warn you that these pages will change your thinking and your life forever!
The Mount Everset of Theology!
Martyn Lloyd-Jones indicated that it "was tried, perhaps stupidly, to
compare the puritans with the Alps, Luther and Calvin in the
Himalayas, and Jonathan Edwards to assemble Everest!" (Puritans: Their
origins and successors, p. 355). I contest. Nothing in my library
holds such a warehouse of the richness, just as these two heavy
volumes. Edwards was a brilliant theologist, a burning evangelist, an
astute philosopher, a heat hearted Pasteur, and an eyewitness (and one
of the primary education instruments causing) the first large alarm
clock. If you want the theology with his richer go end in Edwards the
' "pour which God created the world." IF you want a passion for
hearts, read its "Sinners in the hands of annoyed God." If you are
interested by philosophy well-articulated in its the finer,
attentively read "the nature of the true virtue." If you want the
biography adapted to cultivate piety in your own heart, read "the life
of David Brainerd." If you want the legal consultants pastoral about
the state of your heart, you will not find anything better than "the
religious affections." And if you want to know so that a TRUE rebirth
resembles, study "an account of astonishing conversions." (and this
work is less than half of what is inside here!) If my house burned, I
would probably seize for these two books in the second place only with
the bible. Obtenir Edwards is to obtain theology. Obtain Edwards thus!
Nothing More Valuable to a Christian
This is perhaps the most valuable set of books you will ever buy as a Christian. Jonathan Edwards' breathtaking analysis of the things of God will sweep you off of your feet. I have come to this set of books time and time again for insight, profound reflection, and personal renewal. I would challenge you to read the works of Jonathan Edwards, especially if you are an Arminian. Edwards presents the absolute sovereignty of God with impeccable clarity, logic and argument. If read in faith, you will never be the same. Be sure to get this Banner of Truth set, as the Yale set is far too costly.
